Corde per muovere il Turibolo nella cattedrale. |
Cords to move the Censer in the cathedral. The most famous censer is the Botafumeiro, in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Suspended from the ceiling of the cathedral, this censer is known for his extraordinary height of about five feet and weight of 55 kilograms of pure silver (the current one, cast in 1855 is made of brass coated with silver). For its use are employed around a dozen people and it is oscillated along the central aisle of the church. It is still used symbolically in the solemn celebrations of the cathedral. An explanation of the large size of Botafumeiro was the ancient custom that he was likely to cool the air inside the cathedral, burdened by the presence of many pilgrims who came there to worship at the conclusion of the "camino". |
